Who are you? Where are you from?

I’m Kris Christian and from Memphis, TN!

When did you first fall in love with Jesus?

At a very young age - first it was through the love my parents had for Him. My parents were and still are very involved in ministry and it was through their example in the church and community that I saw what unconditional love was. It wasn’t until I became an entrepreneur that I knew for myself what the love of God was. He’s been so faithful and has kept me throughout my journey.

How/ when did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I decided in high school after I won first place in a Business Plan competition at Christian Brothers through the Memphis Challenge. Winning that competition and being featured in the Commercial Appeal (our local newspaper) gave me the confidence that it was actually a good idea to take a leap.

Tell me about Chicago French Press, why you started it, and what it means to you.

Chicago French Press means so many different things to me. The brand stands for inclusivity and community. It’s evolved into those things but initially it was the solution to a common problem for coffee drinkers. Day in and day out I added heavy sweeteners and creamers to my much so that it became a health concern because I drank coffee multiple times a day. Over time, I developed my solution which became a healthier alternative: Chicago French Press. I blended natural fruits, nuts and flavors to the actual beans during the roasting process to achieve a sweeter taste - no longer needing creamer or sugar. My favorite brewing method,  the french press, brought the fresh, aromatic taste of the beans.

What has entrepreneurship taught you about God and faith?

Entrepreneurship has taught me the power of belief. So many times I have seen my ideas manifest into what God has called for me to do even when I didn’t realize it. Being a full time entrepreneur puts a certain pressure on you to move, to do and to grow. My faith in God and belief that “if He did it once, certainly he would do it again” - this mantra - has kept me and sustained me in business.

How has being married impacted your entrepreneurship journey?

Being married to my husband Derrick has planted me as a person and guided me as a business woman. I’ve had to do a lot of growing up to become the wife I’ve been called to be and this has positively influenced my role as a CEO. To be supported emotionally during times of challenges and to be uplifted and empowered to boldly conquer my goals is something I am very grateful for.

How does being a Christian shape how you lead and conduct business?

Being a Christian provides a roadmap and the bible serves as application of good leadership. Jesus is the ultimate leader. I seek to be like Him when leading my life as a wife, daughter, friend and conducting business as a CEO.

What advice would you give to other women who are currently running or desire to run a business?

I truly believe that before running a business, it’s important to be a student of your industry, to practice as much as possible, to seek out opportunities before jumping into entrepreneurship. I didn’t do that earlier on because I wanted to be my own boss so bad. The reality was I struggled when I didn’t have to. Of course, I don't regret the times because I learned so much but it didn’t have to be that rough. My advice would be prove your concept first through a collaboration or joint venture if possible. I also believe it’s important to establish good relationships by giving.

“When you get, give. When you learn, teach.” I think it's extremely important to pay it 4ward no matter where you are in your process. There’s always something to give - your time, your talent, your efforts, your knowledge.
