3 Reasons to Manage Your Money

Money. Whew chile, other than race and maybe sexual orientation, money is something a lot of christians DO NOT want to talk about. It can be so awkward. People have varying beliefs on what to give and when to give and who to give to. I have heard people say you shouldn’t be wealthy because money is even and I have also heard people just say it shouldn’t be talked about PERIOD.

But the things…God talked about money. So we should to. I encourage you to study the word to get God’s perspective on money in its entirety. But for today I want to highlight three reasons why Christians need to be aware of their financial situation and be equipped to manage it.

The bible, specifically proverbs is FULL of nuggets regarding the stewardship of money, work ethic, and wisdom around money. It is important for us to know what we have and what to do with it from a Biblical perspective. Why you ask? I will tell you.

  1. What we don’t rule, usually rules us. We are in charge of our money. It is our job not to let the fear of or the love of money control what we do with it. The Lord told us let nothing master us. We cannot live in fear, ignorance, or obsession and still consider ourselves mastering money. We serve one master and that is God. (1 Timothy 6:10)

  2. We can’t give what we don’t know we have. Giving is a tough one to tackle. But the fact of the matter is we are called to radical generosity. Many of the issues we feel most passionately about need not just our time but our financial resources. Often times we don’t even know how much we COULD give because we have no idea where our money is GOING.  We are called to take care of the widow and the orphans. How can we do that if we dont even realize we spent $200 bucks on ubers in June??  We often look at these world issues and say where is God? and I have a nagging feeling God is saying where are YOU. Maybe, just maybe, we didn’t get a bonus just to add another garage to the house or splurge on a handbag. I am not trying to shame any of us for our purchases because I am right there with ya. But what if, we are ALSO being given so we can GIVE? (Leviticus 25:35-37, Psalm 41:1-3, Proverbs 11:23-24)

  3. We can’t multiply what we don’t understand. I am a words girl through and through. Numbers makes me want to tear up a little. But how do I become a lender and not a borrower, build wealth to fund Kingdom agendas, and live in financial peace if I dont understand money? We cannot shy away from conversations because we don’t understand. We also cannot pretend that this world doesnt run on a currency.  God has gifted people to love numbers and understand how to manage money. We must engage with them and let them teach us so that we can live in PEACE and be fruitful. A Christians, we need this wisdom from God so that we can flourish financial not just for ourselves but for the Kingdom of God. (Proverbs 22:7, Proverbs 4:7, Luke 14:28)

I am no expert on this but learning how to manage my money has actually given me so much PEACE and allowed me to be a better giver, friend, and overall woman.
