I received this question recently: how do I become a doer of the word?
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. - James 1:22-25
1. Store up the word in your heart. (Psalm 119:11)
I don’t just mean memorizing scripture, I mean internalizing it. Because once it’s really in you, it’s what comes out. I meditated I’m Ephesians 4:32 for the better part of 2016 and every single time I’m upset all I hear is “be kind and compassionate, bearing with one another in forgiveness”. When we let scripture take up root in our hearts, we end up letting it rule our lives. So as a man thinks in his heart so is He! (Proverbs 23:7)
2. Go to the Bible for counsel. (James 3:17)
I was recently faced with someone else’s sin and I truly asked the Lord what to do. I felt led to go read a passage and when I opened my bible, the scripture was about that exact sin and the proper way to deal with it. Sometimes l will even just go on google and search for scriptures about xyz. Let the Bible and prayer be your first stop for wisdom! It won’t steer you wrong.
3. Try. (John 5:8)
It seems simple, but you only get there by doing. Commit to trying. If you do this, God will be faithful to place you in situations where you will have to lean not on your own understanding. And when the time comes, lean into the Holy Spirit and let him guide your decisions. This requires patience, discernment, and the strength to be obedient. Pray and ask God to HELP you cultivate those traits so that you can be a doer!
